I will be posting a question of the week every Monday for moms and girls ages 10+. It pertains to a time in your life when you thought you were perfect. Just kidding-it's actually concerning one of the toughest times you may have gone through...puberty. A lot of stuff came to the surface while writing The Rebecca Chronicles (the perfect book for tween girls). There were memories stuck in my brain I didn't know I had, and when they were awakened, I realized how long I had been holding onto them, and how silly some of my thinking was back then.
For instance, at forty-seven-years old, I refuse to wear the colors pink and orange together, even if it's for a silly Halloween costume. When I was writing the book, it took me back to a day in the eighth grade when I wore a skirt that I absolutely loved. It was a shorter skirt with thin orange and pink stripes. Kids made fun of me because of the skirt. More than a few people laughed and said it looked ugly. To this day, I refuse to wear those colors together. That was over thirty years ago.
If we can talk about these innermost thoughts and feelings, not only can we move forward, but we can help girls this age navigate through these tough years. Instead of telling young girls in your life middle school was easy, let them know you may not have always been popular, and there were embarrassing moments and times you were made to feel insecure. Through relatability comes a relationship, and through that relationship we can give pre-teen girls a strong stage on which to stand.
QUESTION:
HAS ANYONE EVER MADE A REMARK TO YOU OR ABOUT YOU THAT YOU STILL CAN'T SEEM TO SHAKE?
