How do you talk to yourself about body image? Do you use kind words? Do you speak with self-love or self-loathing? This can begin in your pre-teen years. It usually happens when you first start to compare yourself to someone else; an older sister, a cousin, another tween friend, or all three. You think to yourself, Why are my feet so big and my sister's the perfect size or why are my cousin's thighs so much smaller than mine?
If we are not careful about our thoughts, we can why ourselves into needless problems. Our thoughts can defeat us if we let them.
Think about your favorite person in the world, living or dead. The person that makes or made you feel safe, happy, and loved. That person may have guided you, looked after you, or inspired you. You're probably smiling as you're thinking because the thought of them makes you feel good. Notice how you never thought of their body image. You didn't say to yourself, Grandma is incredible, but those five pounds she put on after Thanksgiving are inexcusable! In fact, the person's body image probably never entered your mind.
We connect to people through something far greater than body image. We connect through mind and spirit. Imagine what would happen if you worked on your inner self half as much as you worked on your outer self. Think of the benefits! Take a leap! Tell yourself you're beautiful! What's the worst that can happen? Wouldn't it be wonderful, even years from now, when asking the same question, to be someone's favorite person in the world?
Question of the Week: Are you working as hard internally as you are externally?
